Le Chef - Marko Letonja
Since 2012, the Slovenian conductor Marko Letonja has been Musical Director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and Musical and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has been the Musical Director of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2018/2019 season.
Since 2012, the Slovene Marko Letonja is Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and from season 2018/2019 he will the new Music Director of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra.
He studied piano and conducting at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and in 1989 he graduated from the Vienna Academy of Music where he studied with Otmar Suitner. Already two years later he became Music Director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Ljubljana which he directed until 2003. During this period he started his international career as a concert conductor. He performed with the Wiener Symphoniker on the occasion of the Vienna Festival, with the Philharmonic Orchestras of Munich and Bremen, the Munich Radio-Symphony-Orchestra, the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, toured with the Milan Orchestra Sinfonica “Giuseppe Verdi” and accompanied the famous Swedish soprano Nina Stemme with the Opera Orchestra Stockholm.
Due to his appointment as Chief Conductor and Music Director to the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Theatre Basle in 2003, the focus of Marko Letonja’s acitivities changed to the opera field. Up to 2006, he conducted in Basle new productions of Tannhäuser, La Traviata, Der Freischütz, Boris Godunov, Tristan und Isolde, Rigoletto and Don Giovanni. Moreover, he made several CD recordings with the Basle Symphony Orchestra (e.g. the complete recording of all the symphonies by Felix Weingartner).
With his wide and varied repertoire Marko Letonja has been invited for guest appearances at a.o. Vienna State Opera (Pique Dame and Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Grand Théâtre of Geneva (Pique Dame and Medea), Teatro dell’Opera in rome (Roméo et Juliette), Semperoper Dresden (Nabucco), La Scala Milano (Il dissolute assolto by José Samarago in combination with Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna, The Makropoulos Case and Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Berlin State Opera (Madama Butterfly), Deutsche Oper Berlin (La Traviata), Opéra National du Rhin Strassburg (Walkyrie, Twilight of the Gods, Flying Dutchman, The Makropoulos Case), Teatro Lirico Cagliari (Cavalleria rusticana, I Pagliacci, The Flying Dutchman), with Radio Symphony Orchestra Munich (Carmen in concert) and at Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon (Walkyrie, Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods).
Since the beginning of his career, Marko Letonja has been a frequent and welcome guest in Australia. On a major New Zealand/Australian tour in the summer 2007, he conducted concerts with the Auckland Philharmonia, the Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. From season 2008/09 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Victoria Melbourne.
In 2017 he conducted a new Ring in Stockholm with Nina Stemme and John Lundgren.
During the 2019/2020 season, Marko Letonja will conduct several projects with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra as well as in Seoul.
